It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. The climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the deceit gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the LIEs program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the deceit gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from LIEs after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing continues.

You're here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity.

After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a paper gown to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of Orientation. You may even notice a framed picture on the wall.

If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You're a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your high-rise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You're a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you'll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms.

Enjoy your free time until Orientation! Participation is mandatory for all new and past arrivals.

« « « MY STRINGS ARE TORN

Representatives of both the Up and Down greet everyone when they enter Tall Story Theatre, a location in the Up only accessible during the processing of new Dominants and Submissives into the LIEs program. Participants are filed to their seats and then informed of the following: your role in society (what it is to be a Dominant or Submissive) and the rules of the program.

These Rules of the Program include, but are not limited to:

They must engage in sexual activity at least three times a month and check in at the Orientation Center in the Up once a month to report making their quota.
They have three months to find their first partner and sign a contract.
Only contracted Dominants/Submissives may live together.
LIERs must have their devices on their person when out in public; this is for their safety, of course. Additionally they will not be able to pass the checkpoint between the Up and the Down if they do not have their device with them.
LIERs are expected to adhere to the Duplicity rules of society when out in public; this includes Dominants pairing up with Submissives, not other Dominants.

It is encouraged to "shop around" for prospective partners and not to make any hasty decisions. There will also be mention of jobs for both Dominants and Submissives—more information can be found in the seminars (participation optional)! To help the transition, a survey must be completed before leaving to explore the open workshops.

DOMS AND SUBS 101
Curious to know what it takes to be a good Dominant? Are Submissives really tied up and left in a room for hours on their own? Are you into leather? What about controlling and aggressive? Or maybe you just like to lay back and take it! Either way, find out here from Duplicity residents what being a Dominant and Submissive is really about. There will be embarrassing icebreakers and small skits with a random partner to help you on your way to being the best Dominant or Submissive you can possibly be. Each seminar lasts about an hour, and every participant gets a commemorative tote bag filled with safe sex items as well as a pamphlet and a map of the city.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT SEX
A good Dominant or Submissive knows that a partnership isn’t always about sex. It can be, if that's the dynamic that blossoms, but a true pairing is about deeper connections. A Dominant will look for a partner who is responsive to their gentle urgings, and a Submissive will seek out a Dominant who recognizes their limits. Each relationship is unique. This seminar provides live examples of couples that do not engage in any sex: mother and daughter pairings, two brothers, same and opposite gender couples, and lifelong friends. All partnerships in this workshop find sexual satisfaction in other places. The Dominant leading the seminar will pair people up based on who looks like one another.

WERE WE PAYING ATTENTION?
After the workshops, but before characters are allowed to leave the Tall Story Theatre, there will be a POP QUIZ! This quiz must be completed by new arrivals and established LIERs alike. This gives LIEs written proof that you've been listening to the rules!
